Grounding for Physical Health

Health and more specifically in this post, physical health is vitally important to maintaining our quality of daily living. As a nurse, with two decades of experience in a hospital setting, led to me witness thousands of individuals in health crises after health crises.

I learned as a nurse that being admitted into a room at a hospital, is no easy task and many systems in life has broken down long before illness shows up in the human body. In fact, if I were to ask the patient what else was going on in their life 6 months to a year before their health scare, no one would tell a story of their life being rainbows and roses.

More likely, I would hear a story of a job loss, divorce, a recent death, heart break, high stress, or addiction issues. It is very rare that someone’s life is on top of the world in every way and they suddenly get sick. It is much more common that something, somewhere, deep inside has not been resolved.

Our human body is an incredibly brilliant design that can take a lot of hard knock hits in life before it just can not take it anymore and an illness rises to the surface. A lot of emotional, mental and spiritual hits before the human body just says, no more, I am done, I am going down!

I had my own physical health crises that ended in two separate month long stays in the hospital creating a total of 7 abdominal surgeries 30 years ago. My conscious awareness did not allow room for considering my health crises as anything other than just that, a major failure of my body to function.

Yet looking back with the energetic awareness I have now, about just how important a healthy energy field is to physical health, there was a very clear path before my first surgery, that signaled I was in trouble. I was not sleeping well, working too many hours at the hospital, my marriage was stressful and was trying to be the perfect mother to two elementary school age children. Sound routine and familiar?

Five years later, my stress level was still high, I was not sleeping well, my marriage was on the brink of break up and my children were now teenagers trying to live in a stressful house, oh, and I still worked a lot!

It was during this that I decided to purchase a book on meditation and read the first chapter. That same night, I had a spontaneous out of body experience that took this rational scientific mind nurse into a completely different direction in life. Since that time, my focus has been on just how the human energy field will show all the imbalances in life, long before it shows up in your physical body.

Grounding, I learned later, was my missing link in my meditation. No where in that meditation book did it indicate the concept of grounding. My stress level was so high that simply closing my eyes and taking deep breaths was enough to trigger a cascade of events that took me almost 6 weeks to resolve.

Learning the simple guided meditation to anchor my energy to the center of the earth, stabilized me enough to release my stress, calm my body, and ground me into my physical self. My physical body felt heavy afterwards, which slowed my life down to a pace that was more in balance.

Your spirit is actually quite enormous and only a small portion of your spirit can actually fit into your physical body. When you hear or read the term “Higher Self”, that term means accessing and communicating with that part of your spirit/soul that floats above the human body. The higher self that is not held back by the limitations of your mind or your body.

There are many signals that your body may be trying to tell you that you are ungrounded. Here are some top symptoms.

10 Signs that you are physically ungrounded:

A fullness around your head.

Feeling full headed is a pretty classic symptom that many people describe. Fuzzy, hazy, foggy, pressure on top of the head, headaches, migraines, and dizziness. This is caused by a build up of your energy around your head and grounding can help you to move that energy down into your body, relieving the pressure in the head.

Feel disconnected from yourself.

A more professional term would describe this as dissociating from yourself. Others might describe as feeling beside themselves. Some people even sense as if they are in another part of the room. You may even feel on one side of your body and not the other side.

Feel cold, nervous.

When your energy is above your head that means that most of your spirit is floating and not in your physical body. The physical body can feel contracted, with little vitality. The nervous system is on high alert in this contracted state and is firing signals rapidly trying to sense why. Grounding yourself, pulls more of your spirit into your body and your entire body calms down as it settles and expands. Your nervous system relaxes, feeling greater support from your own spirit.

Talk a lot

Talking a lot, rapid, nonstop, stream of consciousness with no “off button”. This is the type of talking I am referring too! When you are ungrounded, you are not able to even sense how much you are talking. You are also not able to read the signals, subtle energy hints from others that your talking too much! When you ground more of your spirit into your body, your talking slows down and you are more in tune with the rhythm of a conversation. An ungrounded voice can sound like nails on a chalk board. A grounded voice can sound more melodious.

Aches and pains in the body.

Aches and pains in the body are actual places where congested energy builds up and creates an energy block to the flow of your own energy. When there is a block to the flow of fresh new energy it can cause pain in that blocked area. As a nurse, I can say that if you have a blood clot, your body will be screaming in pain because the blood has stopped flowing. Well the same is true for blocked energy. The flow of your fresh energy can not pass through the block into other places in the body and the blocked area will ache. Grounding helps you to release the blocks.

Cold Feet

Another classic symptom of being ungrounded. This is because your energy does not come all the way down into your feet. Your aura is like having a jacket on, but no pants. Grounding your energy all the way to the center of the earth, helps pull your spirit all the way down into your body and into your legs and feet. This helps with foot pain as well.

Trip over yourself

When your energy is not in your physical body, you do not have a sense of yourself or your environment around you. When you spirit is high above your body, you can not intuitively sense that shoe that was left in the middle of the room, causing yourself to trip over it. You can run into a door jam, or bump your head getting into the car. Your spirit helps you to sense your physical body and physical environment.

Constantly dropping or knocking over things.

This is the same as the previous explanation. When your spirit, your energy is not in your body, you literally cannot gauge the distance when you are reaching for something or know just how hard to grip and item with your hand. You cannot gauge where your own physical body is in relationship to your environment.

More forgetful than usual and can not hold a focus

When your spirit floats above your body, your mind is firing all over the place. Your thoughts chaotic or compartmentalized and are challenged to access those different memories in your brain. When you ground your spirit into your body, it calms and slows the nervous firing of the nervous system, allowing a seamless flow from one area of your brain to another, so access to memory is enhanced. As you practice daily grounding, over time, your ability to focus your mind naturally happens. It becomes easier to prioritize your thoughts and remain in the present moment.

Light Bulbs blow out.

Light bulbs, computers, car batteries, street lights, and really anything electrical can blow a breaker just by being around your energy when you do not have enough grounding. Yes, this is a real thing and indicates that your energy is all over the place, and is shooting energy everywhere. Just like an electrician grounds wiring so it does not spark, you too, must ground your electrical system.

So how do you actually ground yourself?

We often hear things like, take your shoes off and stand on the earth, sit at the base of a tree, take a walk in nature or get a massage. All of those things do help a lot and I encourage you to do them all when you are ungrounded.

However the type of grounding that I recommend can be done anywhere, anytime and in just a few minutes.

Find a quiet spot where you can steel away a few moments, even if it is in the bathroom at work, or in your car.

Take a deep breath in, blowing out tension to settle yourself a bit.

Close your eyes and talk yourself into tuning in to your internal landscape.

Talk to your Higher Self, your higher spirit and ask your spirit to share with you and image that represents grounding. This can be a tree, a water fall, a stone, a kite string, steel pole, a horse, or frogs. It can be any image that speaks to you in a grounded way.

Be playful and imaginative as you feel, sense and know this grounding image.

Then connect that image to the area around your hips, around your root chakra. I do not ground from my tailbone or my feet since this does not empty the pelvis of stress. Ground from the pelvis using your image.

Stretch that image, extending it, allowing gravity to gently draw it through the seat, floor, earths crust, as it travels the 4,000 miles to the core of the earth.

Anchor your grounding image to the core of the earth by asking your spirit for another image, anchor image.

Invite more of your spirit to travel the length of your grounding to the earth.

Create an imaginary dial that you can turn up or down to strengthen or lighten your grounding to the perfect setting for you. Grounding too much can feel too heavy, grounding too light may not be heavy enough.

Once you have your grounding set, enjoy it for a few minutes as you release tension and stress down the grounding.

Release anxiety, aches, pain, busy mind, shortness of breath, tight hips, tight neck or anything else that bothers you, right down the grounding to be recycled at the center of the earth.

Spend between 5-10 minutes feeling into your grounding. Then when you are ready, open your eyes and ready yourself for the next part of your day or evening.

I encourage you to start each day with this grounding exercise and once you have mastered it, then please teach family, friends, and co-workers. They will think you are a miracle worker!

  1. This is a nice short easy to read version on grounding, I add my hara line and intention to this grounding exercise and it helps me throughout the day to keep my intention while staying more grounded.

  2. Thank you Nancy.
Very helpful to what you already teach on grounding.
Currently I am using the image of a dragon’s tail and it wrapping it around the core of the earth. Using the arrow shaped tip to stop it from releasing.
